Dr Deon Terblanche, representing the Secretary General of WMO made a brief introduction to the award and the young awardees. The ceremony was attended by H. E. the Commissioner for Education and Culture of EU, Mrs Androula Vassiliou, the former President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr G. Vassiliou, the former Prime Minister of Greece, Mr. I. Grivas, the Commander of the Hellenic National Meteorological Service, Mayor General L. Assimakis, the Deputy Minister for the Environment, Energy and Climate Change, Mr I. Maniatis, the General Secretary of Hellenic Ministry for Culture, Mrs L. Mendoni, members of the Academy of Athens, the Greek Meteorological Society and many distinguished scientists. The 2010 “WMO Professor Mariolopoulos Trust Fund Award” has been decided the following three young Scientists to share it :
- Dr. Peter Tunved (ITM/Stockholm University) for the paper entitled: “The natural aerosol over Northern Europe and its relation to anthropogenic emissions-implications of important climate feedbacks” by P. Tunved et al., published in Tellus.
- Dr. Danijel Belusic (University of Zagreb Croatia) for the paper entitled: “Recent severe heat waves in central Europe: how to view them in a long-term prospect?” by J. Kyselý, published in International Journal of Climatologyhe.
- Dr. Jan Kysely (Institute of Atmospheric Physics ASC Chezch Repuplic) for the paper entitled: “Can mesoscale models reproduce meandering motions?” by D. Belušić and I. Güttler, published in the Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society.
