The exhibition took\u00a0place in Thessaloniki from January 12 to\u00a0February 24, 1994 and it was visited by\u00a0approximately 30,000 students from schools\u00a0of Northern Greece. The opening ceremony\u00a0of the exhibition was attended by Greek and\u00a0French officials and the Vice President of the\u00a0Foundation Professor Christos Zerefos, on\u00a0behalf of the President Mrs. Ekaterini-Nina\u00a0Mariolopoulos, donated a vertical section of\u00a0Pausania\u2019s oak to the Technical Museum of\u00a0Thessaloniki.\n<div id=\"attachment_1121\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1121\" class=\"wp-image-1121\" src=\"https:\/\/mariolopoulosfoundation.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/dris-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"692\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1121\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Branch section of the historical oak of 1 meter diameter (on display at the Natural History Museum (Goulandris) and in the lecture hall of the Foundation)<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1122\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1122\" class=\"wp-image-1122 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/mariolopoulosfoundation.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/94-95-img1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"343\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mariolopoulosfoundation.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/94-95-img1.jpg 250w, https:\/\/mariolopoulosfoundation.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/94-95-img1-219x300.jpg 219w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1122\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Announcement of the Exhibition \u201cWhich Earth for our Children?\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This exhibit is currently on display at the\u00a0Goulandri Natural History Museum in\u00a0Athens, in the Foundation\u2019s lecture hall and\u00a0the last one in the then Technical Museum\u00a0of Thessaloniki (currently known as Intellect\u00a0[Noesis]). Pausania\u2019s oak, according to\u00a0Plutarch, was the tree to which Alexander\u00a0the Great tied his tent before the battle of\u00a0Chaeronea. The exhibit is a descendant\u00a0of the historic oak, it was designated as a\u00a0Preserved Natural Monument (GG (FEK)\u00a0589\/2.10.1985) which was unfortunately\u00a0destroyed after a lightning strike in the\u00a0spring of 1987. In the GG (FEK) in particular\u00a0it is referred to as \u201cA unique individual\u00a0oak (QUERCUS AEGILOPS), along with\u00a0its surrounding area which is biologically\u00a0and ecologically necessary for its effective\u00a0protection, known by the name \u201cThe Tree\u201d,\u00a0located in the geographical and plain area\u00a0of the Anthochorion community in Boeotia,\u00a0and is of great botanical, ecological and\u00a0aesthetic value and according to a local\u00a0tradition it is associated with Alexander the\u00a0Great\u2019s passing through this place\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>The Foundation, in collaboration with the\u00a0Regional Scout Organization of Thessaloniki,\u00a0the Technical Museum, the Municipality\u00a0of Thessaloniki and the Postgraduate\u00a0Program of Environmental Physics, Aristotle\u00a0University of Thessaloniki, participated in\u00a0the organization of the Exhibition titled\u00a0\u201cYouth and Environment\u201d which took place in\u00a0Thessaloniki from February 1 to 28, 1995. The\u00a0exhibition was visited by 40,000 students.<\/li>\n<li>The Foundation awarded cash prizes to the\u00a0students of the following Secondary Schools\u00a0that participated in the 1st student competition of\u00a0Environmental Programs held by Athens College\u00a0from May 5 to May 6, 1995: the Gymnasium of\u00a0Athens College, the 49th Athens Gymnasium and\u00a0the 2nd Gymnasium of Agia Varvara in Athens.<\/li>\n<li>The Foundation contributed to the organization\u00a0of the International Ozone Conference in Chalcidice\u00a0in May 1995 titled \u201cOzone in the Lower Stratosphere\u201c\u00a0in which 350 scientists from all around the\u00a0world participated. Among the co-organizers were\u00a0the European Union, NASA, the Ministry of Environment\u00a0and Water (YPEKA), the National Ozone\u00a0Committee and other international organizations.\u00a0The Conference was held under the auspices of\u00a0the President of the Republic, Mr. Constantine\u00a0Stephanopoulos. The proceedings of the Conference\u00a0were published in the form of summaries\u00a0and certain articles in a special edition\u00a0of the reputable Journal of Geophysical Research\u00a0(102, D1, p. 1335-1590, 1997).<\/li>\n<li>During the ceremony in which the 1995\u00a0Nobel Prize for Chemistry winner, Professor\u00a0P.J. Crutzen was nominated as an Honorary\u00a0Doctor of the Physics Department, Aristotle\u00a0University of Thessaloniki, in May 1996, the\u00a0Mariolopoulos-Kanaginis Foundation for\u00a0the Environmental Sciences honored the\u00a0Nobel winner with the Foundation\u2019s Gold\u00a0Medal of Excellence. Professor P.J. Crutzen\u00a0was subsequently elected a member of the\u00a0Foundation\u2019s Board in 1997.<\/li>\n<li>\n<div id=\"attachment_382\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-382\" class=\"wp-image-382 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/mariolopoulosfoundation.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/xa-img1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"209\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-382\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The late Academician P. Theocharis presents Professor P.J. Crutzen (Nobel of Chemistry, 1995) with the Foundation\u2019s Gold Medal of Excellence.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Foundation participated in the coorganization\u00a0of activities within the\u00a0framework of the competitive Research\u00a0Program \u00abPhotochemical Activity and Solar\u00a0Ultraviolet Radiation (PAUR)\u00bb of the European\u00a0Commission. The Program was funded by the\u00a012th Directorate of the European Union.<\/li>\n<li>The Foundation participated in the\u00a0International Conference of Ancient Greek\u00a0Technology which was held during the project\u00a0\u201cThessaloniki, Cultural Capital\u201d, in August 1997.<\/li>\n<li>The Foundation participated in the UNESCO\u00a0Conference which took place in Thessaloniki\u00a0in December1997. During the event, the\u00a0Foundation together with the Balkan\u00a0Environmental Research and Development\u00a0Institute (\u0392\u0395RDI), awarded the Gold Medal\u00a0of Excellence to the Secretary-General of the\u00a0World Meteorological Organization (WMO)\u00a0of the United Nations, Professor G.O.P. Obasi.<\/li>\n<li>The Foundation, in collaboration with\u00a0The Balkan Environmental Research and\u00a0Development Institute (\u0392\u0395RDI) and the 12th\u00a0Directorate of the European Union, coorganized\u00a0an International Conference in\u00a0Chalcidice, titled \u201cEastern Europe and Global\u00a0Change\u201d on the environmental problems\u00a0and the required actions in the countries\u00a0of Eastern Europe. 120 scientists from 20\u00a0countries participated in the Conference.\u00a0The 300-page volume of the Conference\u00a0Proceedings was printed by the Bureau of\u00a0Official Publications of the European Union\u00a0in Luxembourg.<\/li>\n<li>The Foundation co-sponsored the Meeting\u00a0of the Executive Committee of the Balkan\u00a0Association of Physicists which was held in\u00a0Thessaloniki between 10-13 December, 1997.<\/li>\n<li>Creation of a special account in the World\u00a0Meteorological Organization in a Geneva\u00a0bank titled \u201cWMO Professor Mariolopoulos\u00a0Trust Fund Award\u201d with the aim of funding\u00a0prizes which are awarded by the World\u00a0Meteorological Organization (WMO) of the\u00a0United Nations to commemorate Professor\u00a0Mariolopoulos\u2019 preeminent contribution\u00a0to modern Meteorology and Climatology,\u00a0especially in Greece. The Fund has set up a\u00a0biannual award since 1998 (<a href=\"https:\/\/mariolopoulosfoundation.gr\/?page_id=230&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more info<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>The Foundation, in collaboration with\u00a0the Balkan Environmental Research and\u00a0Development Institute (\u0392\u0395RDI) and the\u00a0Balkan Association of Physicists, announced\u00a0the Environmental Balkaniad. The awards\u00a0were presented by the Secretary General\u00a0of the World Meteorological Organization\u00a0to students from Romania, FYROM, Turkey\u00a0and Greece in a ceremony that took place\u00a0at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in\u00a0October 1998.<\/li>\n<li>The awarding ceremony for the prize \u201cWMO\u00a0Professor Mariolopoulos Trust Fund Award\u201d,\u00a0which is under the auspices of the World\u00a0Meteorological Organization (WMO), was\u00a0held in the Ceremony Hall of the Aristotle\u00a0University of Thessaloniki in October 1998.\u00a0The prize (commemorative medal and 2,000\u00a0US$) was presented by the Secretary General\u00a0of the World Meteorological Organization\u00a0(WMO), Professor G.O.P. Obasi to the study:\u00a0\u201cCorrelations between tropopause height\u00a0and total ozone: Implications for long-term\u00a0changes\u201d by Steinbrecht, W., H. Claude and\u00a0U. Moller of Brandenburg\u00a0Technical University, Germany.<\/li>\n<li>The Foundation co-financed the Advanced\u00a0Study Institute (EU Advanced Study Course)\u00a0titled \u00abInteractions between Chemical\u00a0compounds, the ozone Layer and UV-B fluxes\u00a0(ICLU)\u00bb of the 12th European Directorate held\u00a0in Chalkidiki in October 1998.<\/li>\n<li>The Foundation participated in co-financing\u00a0the Research Program \u00abPhotochemical\u00a0Activity and Solar Ultraviolet Radiation\u00a0Modulation Factors (PAUR II)\u00bb.
