The\u00a0topic of the assignment that would have to\u00a0be developed in approximately 1,000 words\u00a0would have to be related to environmental\u00a0problems observed by students in their\u00a0own area. For example, Soil Pollution,\u00a0Waste Management, Biodiversity Decrease,\u00a0Harnessing Wind Energy or any other topic\u00a0pertaining to the environment that had been\u00a0observed by the students. After the Evaluation\u00a0Committee reviewed the assignments sent\u00a0by the Lyceums, the results were evaluated\u00a0during the 54th Board Meeting on May 25,\u00a02009. For this\u00a0purpose, named invitations were extended\u00a0to two representatives from each country,\u00a0a scientist directing a National Centre of\u00a0Environmental Research and a politician\u00a0at the level of Ministry Director-General,\u00a0so that they could present the situation in\u00a0their countries as it regards to the topic of\u00a0Earth Observation and discuss the possibility\u00a0of a more general and more permanent\u00a0collaboration on this issue. The symposium\u00a0lasted three days, June 8-10, 2009, in the\u00a0central building of Athens University and\u00a0in the \u201cKostis Palamas\u201d building. Eleven (11)\u00a0countries participated in it: Bulgaria, Croatia,\u00a0Romania, Hungary, Moldova, Slovenia,\u00a0Cyprus, Turkey, Lebanon, Egypt, and of\u00a0course Greece. Zerefos and the Head of the Greek GEO Office, Mr. Vasileios Tritakis.<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Within the framework of the celebration for\u00a0the UNESCO International Year for Planet\u00a0Earth, there was held with great success the\u00a0Geo-Meetings Festival (\u00abRencontres de la\u00a0Terre\u00bb) which laid the foundations for annual\u00a0meetings in the following years, where there\u00a0are discussions over the relationships of Man\u00a0with our Planet. In 2009, the program aimed\u00a0at raising the Greek public\u2019s awareness of\u00a0the problems arising in the special fields\u00a0of environmental sciences. Lectures for the\u00a0general public, scientific documentaries, a\u00a0photo exhibition by Yann-Arthus Bertrand,\u00a0a children\u2019s book exhibition and meetings\u00a0gave children and citizens the opportunity\u00a0to come closer to the environment and see\u00a0the world from above. The Festival opening\u00a0took place on the premises of the National\u00a0Athens Observatory in Theseio, with lectures\u00a0by Mr. Christos Zerefos, Academician and\u00a0Chairman of the NAO and MKF, by Mr. Jean\u00a0Dercourt, Academician and Secretary of the\u00a0French Academy as well as by the French\u00a0Ambassador in Athens, Mr. Christophe\u00a0Farnaud. The event was framed by extracts\u00a0from Sophocles\u2019 Antigone read by actors,\u00a0musical interventions and the opening of a\u00a0sculpture exhibition to commemorate the\u00a0sculptor Demetrios Armakolas titled \u201cArt\u00a0meets Nature\u201d. Zerefos, Mrs. Dercourt, Mr. Jean Dercourt, Permanent Secretary of the French Academy of Sciences and Mrs. Christine Armakola (NAO Gardens, Nymph Hill, 2009).<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>The Mariolopoulos-Kanaginis Foundation\u00a0for the Environmental Sciences (MKF) is the\u00a0only Greek foundation that participated\u00a0in the ERA-Net CIRCLE (Climate Impact\u00a0Research Coordination for a Larger Europe).\u00a0On the CIRCLE Board served the MKF\u00a0member, Mr. Vasileios Tritakis, who followed\u00a0the ERA-Net issues. In January 2009, it\u00a0was the Foundation\u2019s turn to organize the\u00a0regular Board summit, which takes place\u00a0every three months at the seat of a CIRCLE\u00a0member. The meeting was held by the MKF\u00a0at the \u201cKostis Palamas\u201d University Hall and\u00a0it was very successful. During the two-day\u00a0meeting, there was a discussion over current\u00a0ERA-Net CIRCLE issues, the most important\u00a0of which was the preparation for the report\u00a0of CIRCLE 1, which was completed in the\u00a0autumn of 2009 and the preparation of the\u00a0CIRCLE 2 proposal for the continuation of\u00a0the program for another four years. Finally,\u00a0it was decided that a new collaboration\u00a0among members would be prepared\u00a0regarding the effects of climate change\u00a0on mountainous regions. Afterwards, the\u00a0Foundation was represented by Mr. V.\u00a0Tritakis at the meetings of the ERA-NET\u00a0CIRCLE group in Bologna, February 24-28,\u00a02009 and in Vienna, May 4-8 and September\u00a09-11, 2009.<\/li>\n<li>The Foundation supported the International\u00a0Conference that was held in Athens\u00a0on the 2nd and 3rd of June, 2009 on\u00a0\u201cClimate Change as a Challenge for Future\u00a0Generations\u201d. The Conference was held\u00a0under the auspices of UNESCO and was\u00a0organized on the initiative of the UNESCO\u00a0Goodwill Ambassador and President of the\u00a0Foundation for the Child and the Family,\u00a0Mrs. Marianna V. Vardinoyannis and of\u00a0the Chairman of the Intergovernmental\u00a0Panel on Climate Change, honored with\u00a0the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize and General\u00a0Manager of \u2018\u2019The Energy and Resources\u00a0Institute\u2019\u2019 [TERI] Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, in\u00a0collaboration with the World Sustainable\u00a0Development Forum. The Conference was\u00a0attended and addressed by the UNESCO\u00a0Director-General Mr. Koichiro Matsuura,\u00a0Prime Minister Mr. Kostas Karamanlis,\u00a0the President of the Opposition Party Mr.\u00a0George Papandreou, the Minister of Foreign\u00a0Affairs Mrs. Dora Bakoyannis, the Minister\u00a0of Development Mr. Kostis Chatzidakis,\u00a0the Minister of Healthcare Mr. Demetrios\u00a0Avramopoulos, the Minister of National\u00a0Education and Religious Affairs Mr. Aris\u00a0Spiliotopoulos and other officials. Among\u00a0the Conference speakers were Nobel\u00a0Prize winners, academicians, scientists,\u00a0politicians, experts and representatives\u00a0of governmental and non-governmental\u00a0organizations from Greece and abroad.
