The\u00a0conference was held on the occasion of a\u00a0catastrophic fire, for the measures of Israel,\u00a0in December 2010 which destroyed 50,000\u00a0acres of forest and rural areas, while 44\u00a0people lost their lives. The conference was coorganized\u00a0by the Ministry of Environmental\u00a0Protection of Israel, the Jewish National\u00a0Fund (KKL) and the CIRCLE2 ERA-Net\u00a0Program. The Mariolopoulos-Kanaginis\u00a0Foundation, as a member of CIRCLE2 ERANet,\u00a0participated in this conference with\u00a0the Associate Professor of the Department\u00a0of Geography on Natural Disasters, Aegean\u00a0University, Mr. Kostas Kalabokides and the\u00a0PhD candidate of the same laboratory, Mr.\u00a0Paleologos Paleologou.<\/li>\n<li>The MKF with the Union of Greek Physicists\u00a0(UGPH) co-organized in Kamena Vourla\u00a0the \u201c14th Panhellenic Conference of Physics\u00a0March 29-April 1st, 2012\u201d on the topic: \u201cDetecting\u00a0the landscape of Modern Physics.\u00a0Emerging areas and new trends.\u201d The conference\u00a0in which more than 150 speakers\/\u00a0researchers participated and which was attended\u00a0by more than 1,000 delegates from\u00a0all over Greece and Cyprus, approached the\u00a0latest trends and technologies emerging in\u00a0modern physics through specific examples\u00a0of their application, such as in environmental\u00a0issues. <a href=\"http:\/\/eef.gr\/sinedria-old\/68-14panelliniofisikis.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/eef.gr\/sinedria-old\/68-14panelliniofisikis.html<\/a><\/li>\n<li>On April 2 \u2013 4, 2012, within the framework\u00a0of the MK Foundation\u2019s programs aimed at\u00a0raising students\u2019 and citizens\u2019 awareness of\u00a0environmental issues, the professor of the\u00a0Department of Geo-environment, University\u00a0of Athens, Mr. Panagiotis Nastos, gave a\u00a0series of lectures to teachers and students of\u00a0Nafpaktos schools. The presentation to the\u00a0local Secondary Education teachers took\u00a0place under the auspices of the Educational\u00a0Advisor of Aitoloakarnania.<\/li>\n<li>The Board of Directors of the Mariolopoulos-Kanaginis Foundation for the Environmental Sciences decided on May 14, 2012 to award\u00a0the Elementary School of the Training and Rehabilitation Centre for the Blind (KEAT),\u00a0with the amount of 2,000\u20ac for its educational\u00a0work on Environmental issues.<\/li>\n<li>The MKF, within the framework of the\u00a0celebration for the International \u201cDay of\u00a0Plant Magic\u201d, undertook and realized at the\u00a0Training and Rehabilitation Centre for the\u00a0Blind (\u039a\u0395\u0391\u03a4) the construction of a model\u00a0\u201cMediterranean Botanical Garden\u201d, which\u00a0includes more than 200 plant species of\u00a0the Mediterranean flora as well as a small\u00a0Vegetable Garden which was planted by the\u00a0children themselves. The MKF\u2019s objective\u00a0was to help the children of \u039a\u0395\u0391\u03a4 to know\u00a0our country\u2019s plants through touch and smell\u00a0and to give their teachers the opportunity to\u00a0teach them the value of each plant. On May\u00a018, 2012, a small celebration was organized\u00a0at \u039a\u0395\u0391\u03a4 by the children and the Centre\u2019s\u00a0teachers and the garden was inaugurated\u00a0under the auspices of European Plant Science\u00a0Organization. The celebration was attended\u00a0by the members of the Foundation Board\u00a0and the children were addressed by the MKF\u00a0Chairman Mr. C. Zerefos, the professor of the\u00a0Agricultural University Mr. G. Skarakis, \u039a\u0395\u0391\u03a4\u00a0Director Mr. F. Katsoulis (Athens, 2012).<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>The MKF, in collaboration with the Greek\u00a0Meteorological Society and the National\u00a0and Kapodistrian University of Athens, coorganized\u00a0the \u201c11th International Conference\u00a0of Meteorology, Climatology and Physics\u00a0of the Atmosphere, COMECAP 2012\u201d. The\u00a0Conference took place in Athens from May 29\u00a0to June 1, 2012 at the University of Athens. The\u00a0objective of the Conference was to highlight\u00a0contemporary research in a multitude of\u00a0fields, such as: Extreme Weather Conditions,\u00a0Weather Analysis and Forecast, Atmospheric\u00a0Radiation, Agricultural Meteorology and\u00a0Climatology etc. as well as to provide the\u00a0opportunity for creative discussion and\u00a0reflection on research issues concerning\u00a0the international scientific community. The\u00a0proceedings of the conference were published\u00a0(electronic and printed editions) by Springer\u00a0Publishing Co, ISBN 978-3-642-29171-5.<\/li>\n<li>During the General Assembly of the Europa\u00a0Nostra Organization, May 29 \u2013 June 2,\u00a02012, the Europa Nostra 2012 Awards were\u00a0presented in Lisbon, Portugal, by its Chairman\u00a0Maestro Pl\u00e1cido Domingo and the E.U.\u00a0Commissioner for Education, Multilingualism\u00a0and Youth Mrs. Androula Vasileiou. The\u00a0Mariolopoulos-Kanaginis Foundation for\u00a0the Environmental Sciences, which has\u00a0been one of the Organizations-Members of\u00a0Europa Nostra since 2011, was represented\u00a0by its Chairman Professor Christos Zerefos.\u00a0At the award ceremony, Maestro Pl\u00e1cido\u00a0Domingo announced Europa Nostra\u2019s\u00a0decision to celebrate the Organization\u2019s 50th\u00a0anniversary in Greece in June, 2013. Europa\u00a0Nostra\u2019s Chairman Maestro Domingo, Mr. K.\u00a0Karras, Vice Chairman of the Greek Society\u00a0for the Environment and Culture and the\u00a0Secretary-General of Europa Nostra Mrs.\u00a0Sne\u0161ka Quaedvlieg-Mihailovi\u0107 discussed and\u00a0accepted the proposal of the MKF Board\u00a0as conveyed by its Chairman, to hold a\u00a0joint celebration for the 50th anniversary of\u00a0Europa Nostra and the 20th anniversary of\u00a0the Foundation, both of which would coincide\u00a0in 2013.<\/li>\n<li>The Mariolopoulos-Kanaginis Foundation for\u00a0the Environmental Sciences co-organized the\u00a0third Greek-French Festival \u201cGeo-Meetings\u201d\u00a0(\u201cLes Rencontres de la Terre\u201d) aiming to raise Environmental Awareness among students\u00a0and citizens. Among the co-organizers of the\u00a02012 Festival were also the Environmental\u00a0Education Office of the First Directorate of\u00a0the Ministry of National Education, Religious\u00a0Affairs and Lifelong Learning and the Sports\u00a0and Youth Organization of the City of Athens.\u00a0The festival events took place from January\u00a024 to June 5, 2012 under the auspices of\u00a0the Municipality of Athens. The program\u00a0focus for 2012 was \u201cOur city tomorrow\u2026.\u00a0the CITY where I would like to LIVE\u201d. Within\u00a0the festival framework there took place\u00a0roundtable evenings, educational workshops\u00a0in \u201cPatakis\u201d Publishing House for students\u00a0and teachers as well as a Competition of\u00a0painting, photography, collage and poster\u00a0with a text message for the schools of the\u00a0Municipality of Athens. 60 schools took\u00a0part in the competition and submitted 180\u00a0works. The Exhibition, which was held at\u00a0\u201cMelina\u201d Cultural Centre of the Municipality\u00a0of Athens, was visited by 700 students from\u00a0Athens schools. The award ceremony was\u00a0successfully held on June 5, 2012. Climate\u00a0Change and a New Energy Future\u201d. The\u00a0exhibition, which was officially opened on\u00a0June 6, 2012, was hosted in Cretaquarium of\u00a0the Hellenic Center for Marine Research in\u00a0Heraklion, Crete until the end of September,\u00a02012. The exhibition was a creation of the American New York Museum of National\u00a0History and it explained the scientific data concerning climate change in a way that\u00a0they could be comprehended by visitors\u00a0of all ages. The MKF Chairman Professor\u00a0Christos Zerefos was the keynote speaker\u00a0at the exhibition\u2019s opening ceremony. The\u00a0Exhibition was officially opened by the\u00a0Minister of Environment, Energy &amp; Climate\u00a0Change, Professor G. Synolakis at the exhibition entrance (Heraklion, Crete, 2012).<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>The Mariolopoulos-Kanaginis Foundation for\u00a0the Environmental Sciences, in collaboration\u00a0with the National Metsovion Polytechnic\u00a0School, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki\u00a0and the National Athens Observatory, coorganized\u00a0the \u201c26th International Laser Radar\u00a0Conference I LRC\u00bb at Porto-Heli on June 25 \u2013\u00a029, 2012. The Chairman of the Mariolopoulos-Kanaginis Foundation, Professor Christos\u00a0Zerefos in his opening address referred to the\u00a0history of Lidar in Greece. The conference\u00a0was attended by approximately 300 scientists\u00a0from more than 15 countries including France,\u00a0Italy, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom,\u00a0the USA, Poland, Chile, etc. The conference\u00a0proceedings were published in Holland by\u00a0the European Space Agency (ESA-ESTEC)\u00a0on behalf of the International Co-ordination\u00a0group for Laser Atmospheric Studies (ICLAS).<\/li>\n<li>On September 24-26, 2012 in Split, Croatia\u00a0there took place the report and review of the\u00a0European Program OBSERVE (FP7) where\u00a0the Board member Mr. Vasileios Tritakis was\u00a0invited to participate as a representative\u00a0of the Foundation and of the Greek GEO\u00a0Office. The meeting included a brief\u00a0introduction regarding the experience drawn\u00a0from the efforts made during the years of\u00a02007\/2008 by the Greek GEO Office and\u00a0the Mariolopoulos-Kanaginis Foundation for\u00a0the Environmental Sciences to organize a\u00a0program similar to OBSERVE. The delegates\u00a0were handed volumes with the proceedings\u00a0of the conference titled \u201cEarth Observation\u00a0Services for Monitoring the Environment\u00a0and Protecting the General Public\u201d which\u00a0was held in June, 2009 in Athens. The\u00a0proceedings were published by the MK\u00a0Foundation. (\u201cEarth Observation Services for\u00a0Monitoring the Environment and Protecting\u00a0the General Public\u201d, 2009)<\/li>\n<li>On October 29, 2012, the Mariolopoulos-Kanaginis Foundation for the Environmental\u00a0Sciences, in collaboration with the Academy\u00a0of Athens (Research Centre for Physics of the\u00a0Atmosphere and Climatology), the University\u00a0of Stockholm, TEMES Company and the\u00a0Navarino Environmental Observatory (NEO),\u00a0co-organized an International Scientific\u00a0Conference on: \u201cThe Greenhouse Effect in our\u00a0planetary system\u201d. The conference was held\u00a0in the Central Hall of the Academy of Athens.\u00a0The conference was addressed by Greek\u00a0and foreign professors. The lectures included\u00a0the development of theories concerning the\u00a0greenhouse effect to the point of ascertaining\u00a0that this has spectacular effects not only on\u00a0Earth, but also on Venus and on Titan, the\u00a0satellite of Saturn. The event was welcomed\u00a0by the Chairman of the Academy of Athens\u00a0Professor G. Kontopoulos, the Chair and\u00a0Vice Chair of the Royal Swedish Academy\u00a0of Sciences, Professors Barbara Cannon and\u00a0Stefan Claesson. Swietlicki,\u00a0published in Atmospheric Chemistry and\u00a0Physics (VOL. 11, 2011), and \u201cObserved surface\u00a0warming induced by urbanization in East\u00a0China\u201d by X. Yang, Y. Hou and B. Chen, published in the Journal of Geophysical\u00a0Research (VOL. 116, 2011). Yang receiving the prize from Dr. Geir Braathen Senior Scientific Officer of the Atmospheric Environment Research Division (AER) Research Department (RES) WMO and the MKF Chairman (Athens, 2012).<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>On October 29-31, 2012 Lisbon hosted the\u00a0Second Meeting of representatives from University\u00a0and Foundation Laboratories taking\u00a0part in the European program CIRCLE2 (Climate Impact Research and Response Coordination\u00a0for a Larger Europe). At this meeting,\u00a0it was decided to launch a research program\u00a0on: \u201cAdaptation Water-related Social\u00a0and Natural Systems to Climate Change:\u00a0Risks, adaptation measures, management\u00a0options, costs and equity issues, in support\u00a0to public policies\u201d in which a Greek research\u00a0group is going to participate funded by the\u00a0Foundation. The MKF was represented by its\u00a0Board member Mr. V. Tritakis.<\/li>\n<li>From October 2011 to December 2012, the\u00a0MKF and the Sparta Spiritual Home (Pneumatiki\u00a0Estia) organized a pilot seminar\u00a0of Environmental Awareness for Spartan\u00a0citizens. The seminar included a series of\u00a0monthly presentations by University professors\u00a0covering a large part of environmental\u00a0sciences. The material of these presentations\u00a0was published by the Foundation.\u00a0(Lectures from the seminar on environmental\u00a0awareness. Zerefos represented the MKF\u00a0with his lecture at the 3-day educational\u00a0seminar of the Environmental Education\u00a0Centre of Stylida, Ypati.
