{"id":1884,"date":"2025-04-16T19:03:54","date_gmt":"2025-04-16T17:03:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mariolopoulosfoundation.gr\/?page_id=1884"},"modified":"2026-03-15T12:54:42","modified_gmt":"2026-03-15T10:54:42","slug":"2025-3","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/mariolopoulosfoundation.gr\/?page_id=1884&lang=en","title":{"rendered":"2025"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p>On <strong>11\/3\/2025<\/strong>, a work meeting was held at the Mariolopoulos-Kanaginis Foundation for the Environmental Sciences within the framework of the LIFE-IP AdaptInGR project on the topic of Climate Change Adaptation in the sector of Public Health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the 6<sup>th<\/sup> work meeting in a row, while corresponding meetings have been held with representatives of agriculture and livestock farming, tourism and insurance, as well as shipping and coastal zones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event was introduced by the President of the MKF and Secretary General of the Academy of Athens, Prof. Ch. Zerefos, the Secretary General of Natural Environment and Waters in the Ministry of Environment and Energy, Mr. P. Varelidis, and the Head of the General Directorate of Public Health and Quality of Life, Mrs. Fotini Koulouri.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On behalf of the Mariolopoulos-Kanaginis Foundation for the Environmental Sciences, the General Secretary of the Board of Directors of the Foundation and Professor of Medicine at the NKUA, Prof. Polyxeni Nicolopoulou-Stamati, emphasized the impact of climate change on public health and the urgent need to adopt targeted measures and policies for its protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was followed by the speakers\u2019 statements, beginning with NKUA Professor, Panagiotis Nastos, on the challenges of climate change in relation to the bioclimate and public health. &nbsp;Afterwards, NKUA Professor of Medicine, Theodora Psaltopoulou, analyzed the correlation between climate change and viral infections, while Lefkothea Evrenoglou, Associate Professor at the University of West Attica, focused on the relationship between climate change and humans, the environment and living beings. Finally, Acting Secretary of the Ministry of Social Cohesion and the Family, Vasiliki Karaouli, referred to the climate crisis and vulnerable social groups, while the Coordinator of the LIFE-IP AdaptInGR Project made a brief presentation of the Project and its contribution to undertaking actions in key areas of interest.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event was also attended by executives of the LIFE-IP AdaptInGR Project, the Mariolopoulos-Kanaginis Foundation for the Environmental Sciences, the Academy of Athens, the Bank of Greece, the Ministry of Environment and Energy, &nbsp;the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, of the Ministry of Social Cohesion and the Family, the Ministry of Health, the National Meteorological Service, the Public Employment Service, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens,&nbsp; including the Vice-Rector of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), Christos Karagiannis, Associate Professor at the University of West Attica, Mrs. Lefkothea Evrenoglou, etc. The work meeting concluded with the fruitful dialogue that developed between the attending representatives of institutions, highlighting the need, on the one hand, for adaptation to climate change in the public health sector, and on the other hand, for the activation of professional groups on climate change adaptation issues through the corresponding actions of the LIFE-IP AdaptInGR Project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"769\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/mariolopoulosfoundation.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/1744175236729-2-769x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1887\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mariolopoulosfoundation.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/1744175236729-2-769x1024.jpg 769w, https:\/\/mariolopoulosfoundation.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/1744175236729-2-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/mariolopoulosfoundation.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/1744175236729-2-768x1023.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mariolopoulosfoundation.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/1744175236729-2-1153x1536.jpg 1153w, https:\/\/mariolopoulosfoundation.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/1744175236729-2-1538x2048.jpg 1538w, https:\/\/mariolopoulosfoundation.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/1744175236729-2-660x879.jpg 660w, https:\/\/mariolopoulosfoundation.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/1744175236729-2-scaled.jpg 1922w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 769px) 100vw, 769px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">During the presentation of NKUA Professor, Panagiotis Nastos.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>On <strong>May 15 \u2013 17, 2025<\/strong>, the Mariolopoulos-Kanaginis Foundation for the Environmental Sciences, with the European Network of Scientists for Social and Environmental Responsibility (ENSSER) and the Research Centre for Atmospheric Physics and Climatology of the Academy of Athens, co-organized the International scientific conference on \u201cScience and Policy in Times of Multicrisis and Dissent\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Conference, with the participation of leading scientists from Greece and abroad, was opened by Professor Christos Zerefos, Secretary General of the Academy of Athens and President of the Mariolopoulos-Kanaginis Foundation for the Environmental Sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The key Conference Questions put up for discussion were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Is scientific knowledge integrated into policy-making strategies for the benefit of society?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What potential does science have to contribute to sound political decision-making?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How should scientific discourse between experts and policy-makers be formed?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What can scientists do when governments question scientific knowledge without any substantiation?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The contribution of scientists to decision-making and how these decisions can be integrated into legislation was also discussed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conference conclusions formed the basis for a round table to be organized at the Plenary Session of the European Parliament in the autumn of 2025 in Brussels. The conference was closed by Emeritus Professor of Environmental Pathology at the NKUA, Ms. Polyxeni Nicolopoulou-Stamati, President of ENSSER and Secretary of the Board of the Mariolopoulos-Kanaginis class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Participation of the Foundation in the Youth Adapt Action of the LIFE IP Programme<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Within the framework of the European <strong>LIFE IP AdaptInGR <\/strong>Programme, the <strong>Mariolopoulos-Kanaginis Foundation for the Environmental Sciences<\/strong> actively participates in the <em>Youth Adapt Action<\/em>, aiming to inform and raise students\u2019 awareness of <strong>climate change<\/strong> and <strong>adaptation to the new climate conditions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the action, educational visits were conducted to schools in <strong>Attica<\/strong> (across all municipalities), <strong>Crete<\/strong> and the <strong>Peloponnese<\/strong>.&nbsp; Students aged <strong>7 to 17 <\/strong>had the opportunity to attend interactive presentations and actively participate in the discussion, exchanging knowledge and experiences they had already acquired through their school life or from other sources of information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, school units from areas of <strong>Northern Greece<\/strong> and the <strong>Aegean<\/strong> participated online, thus reinforcing the <strong>dissemination of the message<\/strong> at a national level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The action <strong>will continue during the<\/strong> <strong>2025\u20132026 school year<\/strong>, with new presentations in schools across the country, both in person and through online participation.<strong>More information about the has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>On <strong>December 2, 2025<\/strong>, within the framework of the LIFE-IP AdaptInGR project, a Conference on Adaptation to Climate Change in the fields of Forestry, Biodiversity, and Ecosystems was held at the Mariolopoulos-Kanaginis Foundation for Environmental Sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event was prefaced by the President of the MKF, Professor Christos Zerefos, and the Professor of Medicine at the NKUA and Secretary of the MKF Board of Directors, Ms. Polyxeni Nicolopoulou, emphasizing the role and importance of bees in ecosystems. This was followed by the speakers\u2019 statements, starting with NKUA professor, Ms. Margarita Arianoutsou-Faraggitaki, who analyzed the topic \u201cThe biodiversity of Greece under the conditions of climate change\u201d. The AUTH professor, Mr. Filippos Aravanopoulos, presented the topic \u201cImpacts of climate change on the cornerstone of biodiversity, genetic diversity, as they emerge in forest ecosystems\u201d in detail. The Manager of the LIFE-IP AdaptInGR Project, Ms. Konstantina Zoumpoulaki (civil engineer), presented the program of the project. Finally, the Assistant Professor at the NKUA, Mr. Nikolaos Fyllas, closed the presentations with the topic entitled \u201cAssessment of the vulnerability of forest ecosystems to climate change\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Conference continued with a discussion among the participants and an analysis of the conclusions. During the discussion, emphasis was placed on the pressures that different ecosystems and species are under due to climate change, the research carried out in recent years in this field, as well as the urgent need for action in order to shield nature and the ecosystems under threat.
