{"id":223,"date":"2017-11-02T12:43:04","date_gmt":"2017-11-02T10:43:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mariolopoulosfoundation-test.gr\/?page_id=223"},"modified":"2018-07-22T22:11:07","modified_gmt":"2018-07-22T20:11:07","slug":"%ce%b4%ce%ae%ce%bb%cf%89%cf%83%ce%b7-%cf%84%cf%89%ce%bd-%ce%b1%ce%b8%ce%b7%ce%bd%cf%8e%ce%bd-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/mariolopoulosfoundation.gr\/?page_id=223&lang=en","title":{"rendered":"Athens Statement for vulnerable Children and Climate Change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today, on June 3, 2009, in Athens, Greece,\u00a0high-ranking experts in the field of Climate\u00a0Change from various countries, from the\u00a0fields of research, the business sector,\u00a0organizations of the Civil Society as well as\u00a0Governmental Organizations discussed the\u00a0following issues:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the Social Dimension of Climate Change,\u00a0including its effects on health, especially in\u00a0vulnerable population groups<\/li>\n<li>the Endorsement of a Strategic Plan in an\u00a0international and national context<\/li>\n<li>Technological Development and Transport<\/li>\n<li>Investment and Financial Needs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And they concluded with the following\u00a0Statement:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For regions, such as the Mediterranean\u00a0region, where climate change can lead to\u00a0a significant decrease in rainfall and water\u00a0resources, to more frequent heatwaves and\u00a0more intense urban phenomena of ozone\u00a0pollution, the new scientific and political\u00a0challenges must be addressed and reviewed.<\/li>\n<li>The vulnerable population groups of the\u00a0Mediterranean, such as the elderly and\u00a0children with chronic diseases, as well as\u00a0ecosystems are among those more likely\u00a0to be afflicted by the destabilization of the\u00a0climatic system.<\/li>\n<li>It is imperative that we adapt to these\u00a0effects of climate change, checking the\u00a0intensity of those human actions that have\u00a0environmental effects on people and the\u00a0biosphere. While adapting, it is also urgent\u00a0to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases.\u00a0The Mediterranean region is particularly\u00a0suitable for achieving this goal by reinforcing\u00a0the use of renewable sources of energy and\u00a0by promoting effective actions and ecotechnologies\u00a0in important sectors of the\u00a0economy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Athens Statement aims at exploring methods\u00a0in order to contain climate change and\u00a0adjustment to it, by discussing at the same time\u00a0the relevant opportunities and restrictions, as\u00a0well as the challenges for future generations,\u00a0taking into consideration the reduced durability\u00a0of the most vulnerable and the poorest part\u00a0of the population.
