On 11/3/2025, a work meeting was held at the Mariolopoulos-Kanaginis Foundation for the Environmental Sciences within the framework of the LIFE-IP AdaptInGR project on the topic of Climate Change Adaptation in the sector of Public Health.
This is the 6th work meeting in a row, while corresponding meetings have been held with representatives of agriculture and livestock farming, tourism and insurance, as well as shipping and coastal zones.
The event was introduced by the President of the MKF and Secretary General of the Academy of Athens, Prof. Ch. Zerefos, the Secretary General of Natural Environment and Waters in the Ministry of Environment and Energy, Mr. P. Varelidis, and the Head of the General Directorate of Public Health and Quality of Life, Mrs. Fotini Koulouri.
On behalf of the Mariolopoulos-Kanaginis Foundation for the Environmental Sciences, the General Secretary of the Board of Directors of the Foundation and Professor of Medicine at the NKUA, Prof. Polyxeni Nicolopoulou-Stamati, emphasized the impact of climate change on public health and the urgent need to adopt targeted measures and policies for its protection.
This was followed by the speakers’ statements, beginning with NKUA Professor, Panagiotis Nastos, on the challenges of climate change in relation to the bioclimate and public health. Afterwards, NKUA Professor of Medicine, Theodora Psaltopoulou, analyzed the correlation between climate change and viral infections, while Lefkothea Evrenoglou, Associate Professor at the University of West Attica, focused on the relationship between climate change and humans, the environment and living beings. Finally, Acting Secretary of the Ministry of Social Cohesion and the Family, Vasiliki Karaouli, referred to the climate crisis and vulnerable social groups, while the Coordinator of the LIFE-IP AdaptInGR Project made a brief presentation of the Project and its contribution to undertaking actions in key areas of interest.
The event was also attended by executives of the LIFE-IP AdaptInGR Project, the Mariolopoulos-Kanaginis Foundation for the Environmental Sciences, the Academy of Athens, the Bank of Greece, the Ministry of Environment and Energy, the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, of the Ministry of Social Cohesion and the Family, the Ministry of Health, the National Meteorological Service, the Public Employment Service, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, including the Vice-Rector of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), Christos Karagiannis, Associate Professor at the University of West Attica, Mrs. Lefkothea Evrenoglou, etc. The work meeting concluded with the fruitful dialogue that developed between the attending representatives of institutions, highlighting the need, on the one hand, for adaptation to climate change in the public health sector, and on the other hand, for the activation of professional groups on climate change adaptation issues through the corresponding actions of the LIFE-IP AdaptInGR Project.
