Elena Xoplaki, Ph.D. Department of Geography, Justus-Liebig-University of Giessen, Germany Dr. Xoplaki is Assistant Professor at the Department of Geography of the Justus-Liebig-University of Giessen. She is an expert in Mediterranean climate change. She has conducted analysis on weather extremes (heat waves, floods, droughts, etc.) and health impacts, paleoclimatology; climate reconstructions / model comparison, influence of circulation on European and Mediterranean climate. She has participated in and coordinated several European, Swiss and US research projects. She holds a Ph.D. in Natural Sciences from the University of Bern, Switzerland. Dr. Xoplaki has experience as project coordinator and science officer and she is the former deputy executive director of the Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research and coordinator of the Graduate School of Climate Sciences at the University of Bern. From August 2011, she is awarded an Akademischer Rat (Assistant Professor) position at the University of Giessen, Germany. In this function, she is doing research on the Mediterranean climate, climate change and impacts and she is teaching at the BSc and MSc level at the Department of Geography.

Zerefos, Ph.D. Research Center for Atmospheric Physics and Climatology, Academy of Athens, Greece Dr. Zerefos is Academician, Head of the Research Center for Atmospheric Physics and Climatology of the Academy of Athens and Emeritus Professor at the University of Athens. He is President elect of the International Ozone Commission of IAMAS of ICSU, member of the Academy of Athens, the Norwegian Academy of Sciences and Letters, the Academia Europaea, the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences and other prestigious Institutions. Has been working with WMO, EU and governments on environmental matters for more than 35 years on ozone depletion, UV threats and climate change. Has been awarded the Global Ozone Award from UNEP, 1997 Editors Award for Excellence in Refereeing from AGU, the European Physical Society and the Balkan Physical Union Award and other international distinctions. Dr. Zerefos has acted as author, coauthor and review editor in WMO/UNEP Ozone Assessment reports. Review editor and reviewer in the IPCC Aviation and Extreme Events reports. The IPCC reports have been recognized at the highest level by sharing the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. In the past 30 years, Dr. Zerefos founded the following Research Centers and Institutions of worldwide reputation: Research Center for Atmospheric Physics and Climatology at the Academy of Athens (1978); Laboratory of Atmospheric Physics, University of Thessaloniki (1981); WMO Northern Hemisphere Ozone Mapping Center (1991); Graduate Programme on Environmental Physics, University of Thessaloniki (1991); Laboratory of Atmospheric Environment, Biomedical Research Foundation, Academy of Athens (2003); UNESCO Chair on Natural Hazards in the Geosphere, the Hydrosphere and the Atmosphere (2006); Geoastrophysics Museum, National Observatory Athens, Greece (2008); Navarino Environmental Observatory (NEO) in Messenia (2012).

Gilles Ollier EC RTD.I4, Earth Observation Sector, Belgium Mr. Gilles OLLIER has joined the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD) of the European Commission in 1993. Since that time, he has devoted most of his career to managing EU research and innovation activities for the Environment across various EU Framework Programmes for research and technological development.
He is currently heading the Sector on Earth Observation in DG RTD, contributing to the implementation of research and innovation activities in this domain, and acting as contact point for the European Commission for the international GEO initiative (Group on Earth Observations). He is particularly involved in the coordination of Earth Observation research in Europe, the international cooperation in the field of Earth observation and the various issues relevant to handling and processing Earth Observation data (including big data and computing infrastructures). Mr. Gilles OLLIER has a background of geologist. He graduated at the French Institute Petroleum and has been working at the French Oceanographic Institute (IFREMER) for 10 years as a marine geoscientist. He has notably been involved in the International Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) and contributed to it on the occasion of a sabbatical year at Columbia University. |
Stefaan de Mey, Ph.D. Eurisy, France Of Belgian nationality, Stefaan De Mey was awarded a Civil Engineering degree from Ghent University, Belgium, in 1997. He obtained in addition a Master degree in Biomedical and Clinical Engineering (1999), a PhD in Applied Sciences (2001) and a Bachelor degree in Law (2010).
Dr. De Mey started his professional career in 1997 conducting multidisciplinary research in the field of cardiovascular fluid dynamics and the non-invasive diagnosis of diastolic heart failure using ultrasound. His research project has been supported by a grant from the Flemish Institute for the Promotion of Science and Technology (IWT) and conducted in close cooperation with the Department of Cardiology of the Ghent University Hospital, Belgium, and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation Cardiovascular Imaging Unit, Ohio, USA. In 2001 he joined ESA’s European Space Research and Technology Centre in Noordwijk, The Netherlands, working on various assignments including the development of medical instrumentation for research in microgravity, the end-to-end system engineering management of the EXPERT re-entry vehicle and launcher services, and the procurement of an observatory to be placed on the exterior of the International Space Station (ISS) aiming at measuring high altitude lightning. From 2008 he provided the integration management function of the ESA payloads and experiments selected for the International Space Station (ISS) vis-à-vis Users, User Support Operation Centres, Payload Developers, Implementation Organisations and ISS International Partners. Since October 2011 he is heading as secretary general the permanent secretariat of Eurisy, an international association of governmental space offices and space agencies, international organisations, research institutions, and private businesses involved or interested in space-related activities. Eurisy’s mission is to facilitate the access of professional communities to satellite information and services thus helping to ensure that society fully benefits from European investments in space, notably in programmes such as Galileo and Copernicus, and in satellite telecommunications. |
Nancy L.C. Steele, D. Env. Council for Watershed Health, Los Angeles, California, USA Dr. Steele is the Executive Director of the Council for Watershed Health, a regional hub for essential watershed research and analysis, headquartered in Los Angeles, California. She currently serves on the Board of the Marine Conservation Research Institute and on the Greater Los Angeles Regional Water Management Group. Dr. Steele is a Stanton Fellow of the Durfee Foundation and a Fellow of the Robert & Patricia Switzer Foundation. In 2010, she was honored by the 21st Senate and 44th Assembly Districts for her work in Energy and Environment, receiving the Women in Business Award. Prior to joining the Council in 2005, Dr. Steele worked in various California agencies to reduce diesel emissions from heavy-duty trucks and buses, eliminate childhood lead poisoning, and control environmental emissions. She was the California Air Resources Board Deputy Ombudsman from 1997-1999. Dr. Steele co-founded the Arroyos and Foothills Conservancy in 2000 and served as its President and CEO through 2011. She and her husband, Bruce, run a beekeeping business, Chaparral Mountain Honey Company. She earned her doctorate in environmental science and engineering from University of California, Los Angeles, her M.S. from Arizona State University, and her B.A. from Occidental College.

Evangelos Gerasopoulos, Ph.D. Institute for Environmental Research and Sustainable Development, National Observatory of Athens, Greece Dr. Gerasopoulos is Research Director at the National Observatory of Athens. He studied Physics at the Physics Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and received his M.Sc. in the field of Environmental Physics from the same department. Dr. Gerasopoulos was awarded a Ph.D. in the field of Atmospheric Dynamics. He conducted parallel research within the activities of the Laboratory of Atmospheric Physics and the Environmental Radioactivity Group at the Physics Department and worked as Post Doctoral fellow at the Max Planck Institute (Biogeochemistry Department, Mainz) in the field of Aerosol Science. At the Environmental Chemical Processes Lab of the University of Crete he conducted postdoctoral research on the variability of aerosols and trace gases at remote-marine environments. In 2006 he was employed by the National Observatory of Athens and is Research Director from 2011. Dr. Gerasopoulos is the Quality Manager of the Atmospheric Chemistry Laboratory/NOA and member of the Steering Committee of the Navarino Environmental Observatory (Messenia, Greece). He is Editor of the "Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics" EGU/Copernicus.

Margarita Arianoutsou-Farangitaki, Ph.D. Department of Ecology and Systematics, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece Dr. Margarita Arianoutsou-Farangitaki is Professor of Ecology at the Department of Ecology and Systematics of the Faculty of Biology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She is the Head of the Terrestrial Ecology Group. Her research and teaching fields comprise ecology and management of Mediterranean ecosystems, fire ecology, diversity and conservation, biological invasions, environmental education. She has published over 100 scientific articles and edited five books published by Kluwer, Plenum Press, Millpress and Springer. Margarita has organized five international conferences and has been invited speaker in numerous international and national scientific conferences. She has coordinated more than 30 national research projects and participated in over 25 European research projects. She has supervised ten Ph.D. theses and more than twenty First Diploma Theses in ecology and environmental education. Margarita was elected and acted twice as the Secretary of the International Society of Mediterranean Ecologists (ISOMED). She was elected and acted as President of the Hellenic Ecological Society (HELECOS) (2010-2012). She is Vice Chair of the FP0701 Cost Action, member of the Scientific Committee of the European Centre of Forest Fires, and member of the management committee of the Cost action TD 1209: Alien Challenge.

Dimitrios Balis, Ph.D. School of Physics, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece Dr. Balis is Assistant Professor at the Physics Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. His main academic and professional activities of include remote sensing of the composition of the atmosphere using active and passive techniques (lidar, satellites) with emphasis on ozone, nitrogen dioxide and aerosols. Dr. Balis has been involved in various projects related to the validation of satellite products with ground-based measurements. He has long experience with data analysis and coupling between model results and observations and model evaluation. He has participated in more than 50 EU, international or national funded projects, being the principal investigator of AUTH or coordinator in 30 of them. He has more than 100 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals and more than 1800 third-party citations.

She graduated in Madrid on European law and holds a French D.E.A. in Environmental Law. She was the Executive Director at European Association for Public Water Operators, Aqua Publica Europea, and Policy Officer for environment within EUROCITIES –the European Network of 140 large cities. She has worked at the European Commission on climate change and energy issues, the Eamonn Bates, Public Affairs Environmental Consultancy Firm and the law firm Lovells Boesebeck Droste. Eva. Banos de Guisasola has coordinated European projects as director. She has taken secondments in Birmingham, Vienna, Gothenburg and Washington. She recently participated in the Water Caravan in Palestine.

Rupa Basu, Ph.D., MPH Environmental Health Hazard Assessment, California Environmental Protection Agency, California, USA Dr. Basu is an epidemiologist/research scientist at the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) at the California Environmental Protection Agency. Prior to joining OEHHA, she worked at the US Environmental Protection Agency, after obtaining her PhD degree in environmental and occupational epidemiology from The Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health and her MPH degree with an emphasis in environmental health sciences from the UCLA School of Public Health. She has extensive experience and expertise relating to the effects of temperature on human health outcomes. Her research has used various epidemiologic methods, including the case-crossover and time-series study designs, to estimate the independent effects of temperature and air pollution on mortality, morbidity, and adverse birth outcomes, with a focus on identifying vulnerable subgroups and racial/ethnic disparities. She serves on several statewide and other climate change committees and has been an invited to be a guest speaker on many occasions, most recently by former Governor Schwarzenegger at USC and “Years of Living Dangerously” on Showtime. Dr. Basu’ s work is widely cited, and she has served as a referee for many epidemiologic, meteorologic, and environmental health journals, as well as for several grant proposals for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

He was a lead author of UNEP’s IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) 4th Assessment Report (2007) on Climate change impacts, adaptation and vulnerability. He is NOA’s Principal Investigator in several major climate change and impacts related EU projects. Dr. Giannakopoulos has experience in the field of global chemical transport models and has participated in the World Climate Research Program for the assessment of large-scale atmospheric model performance. He is Member of the Climate Change Impacts Study Committee formed by the Bank of Greece to study the environmental, economic and social consequences of climate change in Greece. Dr. Giannakopoulos has authored and co-authored over 45 peer-reviewed papers and 65 publications in conference proceedings.

Her research focuses on the interactions between climate change and people, with particular emphasis on agriculture and water. She currently leads several projects of the European Commission related to climate change adaptation policy. Dr. Iglesias works with the United Nations and the World Bank. She is a contributing author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) since 1995 and currently, she is the Review Editor of the Economics of Climate Change for the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report. Her work has appeared in more than 100 scientific articles.

Iphigenia Keramitsoglou, Ph.D. Institute for Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Applications and Remote Sensing, National Observatory of Athens, Greece Dr. Keramitsoglou is a Senior Researcher at the Institute for Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Applications and Remote Sensing (IAASARS) of the National Observatory of Athens (NOA). She holds a Ph.D. degree from Imperial College London, a M.Sc. in Remote Sensing from University College London and a Physics Degree from National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Dr. Keramitsoglou has participated in 25 national and European Earth Observation projects either as a technical/scientific responsible, WP leader or as a research associate. She is a key scientific contributor in GEO Global Urban Observation and Information 2012-15 work task. She is the author of 31 Journal articles including papers related to monitoring of urban heat islands, heat wave risk and evaluation of methodologies for studying the thermal urban environment. She is herself reviewer of the most highly ranked Remote Sensing journals. Currently, Dr. Keramitsoglou has active collaborations with numerous national, European and international entities. She is also representing IAASARS in the Greek national platform for disaster reduction (part of the international Hyogo Framework for Action - HFA) and is Member of the Societal Benefits Implementation Board, SBIB, of GEO.

Nikos Mihalopoulos, Ph.D. Department of Chemistry, University of Crete & Institute of the Environmental Research and Sustainable Development, National Observatory of Athens, Greece Dr. Mihalopoulos is a Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics at the Department of Chemistry of the University of Crete and Director of the Institute of Environmental Research and Sustainable Development (IERSD) of the National Observatory of Athens (NOA). He received his Ph.D. in Environmental Chemistry and Physics in 1989 from University Paris 7 (France). He has been research scientist at CNRS and Wuppertal University (Germany) and visiting Professor at MPI (Mainz, Germany) and Sapporo University (Japan). He was awarded a Marie Curie and IKY fellowships for his post doctorate and doctorate studies. Dr. Mihalopoulos is in the editorial Board of Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics and acted as guest editor of several special issues in various journals. He has been the Chairman (2004-2006) and Alternate Chairman (2003-2004 and 2010-2012) of the Department of Chemistry, member of the Senate and member of the research committee of the University of Crete (2002-2009). He acted as President and member of the Environment Committee, ΝΑΤΟ (Science for Peace), 2004-2007. He has been member of scientific committees in several International conferences, referee for PhD and habilitation theses at European Universities and research proposal reviewer for international organizations including ERC, NSF, NERC, BMBF, CNRS etc.

Bongani Mnisi, B.Sc. Biodiversity Management Branch, City of Cape Town, South Africa Bongani Mnisi is a qualified Executive Business Coach. He is a Regional Manager in the Environmental Resource Management, Biodiversity Management Branch of the City of Cape Town where he manages the largest part of the City’s Biodiversity Network including three Nature Reserves. He is responsible for the development of strategic and operational management plans for the region; he also manages the stakeholder relationships both external and internal to enforce a participative approach towards conservation management. Mr Mnisi also coordinates the performance management and leads the mentorship programme for the branch as part of his interest in Human Capital Development. He currently serves as a Deputy Chairperson of the Board of the Breede-Overberg Catchment Management Agency. He also serves as a committee member of the Fynbos Forum and the Botanical Society of South Africa. Mr Mnisi is currently completing his MSc in Botany at the University of Stellenbosch (US). He also received a Bachelor of Technology in Nature Conservation from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) and a Bachelor of Philosophy in Sustainable Development: Development Planning and Management (US). He also completed various certificates in Coaching (US), Project Management (CPUT), Community-based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) and Conservation Stewardship and Extension from the Rhodes University and the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, respectively.

David Nahai David Nahai Companies, Los Angeles, California, USA David Nahai is the President of David Nahai Consulting Services, LLC, which advises public and private entities in the renewable energy, energy efficiency and water sectors. He is also a partner at the law firm of Lewis, Brisbois, Bisgaard & Smith and co-chair of its energy, water, and real estate practice areas. He is also the former Commission President and General Manager of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP). Mr. Nahai’s administration expanded LADWP’s renewable portfolio to 15% and paved the way for its attainment of the 20% level. Under David Nahai’s watch, the LADWP achieved multi-fold increases in energy efficiency levels, as well as record reductions in water consumption in the City of Los Angeles. Mr. Nahai is also the former Chair of the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board, where he served in the administrations of 3 California governors. He sits on the Boards of the California League of Conservation Voters, Heal the Bay, and the UCLA Luskin Center for Innovation and has served as a Senior Advisor to the Clinton Climate Initiative. He is also a member of the Leadership Council of the Los Angeles Clean Tech Incubator.

Barbara Norman, Ph.D. Faculty of Business, Government and Law, University of Canberra, Australia Dr. Norman is Professor in the Faculty of Business, Government and Law, University of Canberra, Foundation Chair of Urban and Regional Planning. Dr. Norman is Director of Canberra Urban and Regional Futures (CURF) and an Adjunct Professor with The Australian National University. Barbara is Chair of the ACT Climate Change Council, Deputy Chair of Regional Development Australia (ACT) and a member of the national stakeholder advisory group to the CSIRO Climate Adaptation Flagship. She is a Life Fellow and past national president of the Planning Institute of Australia and Life Honorary Fellow of the Royal Town Planning Institute (UK). Her research and teaching interests include urban and regional planning, sustainable coastal planning, climate change adaptation and urban governance. Dr. Norman was Chief Investigator of the recent report South East Coastal Adaptation (SECA): Coastal urban climate futures in SE Australia from Wollongong to Lakes Entrance. She is a contributing author to the forthcoming IPCC report on Impacts (March 2014). Dr. Norman has extensive experience in the public sector at all levels of government including senior executive roles in the ACT Government. Professor Norman advises the public and private sector in Australia and has strong international linkages within Asia, Europe and the United States. She was awarded an Australian Centenary Medal for her contribution to the community through urban and regional planning.

Shlomit Paz, Ph.D. Department of Geography and Environmental Studies, University of Haifa, Israel Dr. Paz is a faculty member at the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at the University of Haifa, Israel. She is a climatologist who analyses the impacts of climate change on the human health with a special attention to the effects on the transmission of vector-borne diseases. Her studies for Europe, the Mediterranean, East Africa and India appear in leading peer-review journals in both fields of atmospheric sciences and environmental health. Dr. Paz is involved in many research projects including for the EU-FP, the European Science Foundation (ESF), the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the Israel Ministry of Environmental Protection among others.

Christos Repapis, Ph.D. Mariolopoulos-Kanaginis Foundation for the Environmental Sciences, Athens, Greece Dr. Repapis is the General Secretary in the Board of Directors of the Mariolopoulos– Kanaginis Foundation for the Environmental Sciences. Dr. Repapis received his BSc from the Physics Department of the National Kapodistrian University of Athens and holds a Master degree in Meteorology and a Ph.D. in Meteorology–Climatology. He contacted post doctoral research in the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colorado, in the University of Minnesota and in the University of Birmingham, UK. Dr. Repapis served as an Associate Professor in the Department of Meteorology, University of Ioannina, Greece and during the period 1985-2005 he was the Director of the Research Center of Atmospheric Physics and Climatology of the Academy of Athens. His published work includes several papers in international, peer reviewed journals and scientific reports in the field of Meteorology, Climatology and Physics of the Atmosphere.

Barbara J. Ryan, M.Sc. Director, GEO Secretariat, Geneva, Switzerland Barbara J. Ryan is Secretariat Director of the intergovernmental Group on Earth Observations (GEO) located in Geneva, Switzerland. In this capacity, she leads the Secretariat in coordinating the activities of 90 Member States and 67 Participating Organizations who are striving to integrate Earth observations so that informed decisions can be made across nine Societal Benefit Areas including agriculture, biodiversity, climate, ecosystems, energy, disasters, health, water and weather. Before assuming this position in July 2012, she was the Director of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Space Programme. She had responsibility for the space-based component of the WMO Global Observing System (GOS), coordinated space-based assets to meet the needs of WMO Members in the topical areas of weather, water, climate and related natural disasters, and also served as the technical focal point for WMO’s activities with GEO. Before joining WMO in October 2008, she was the Associate Director for Geography at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in Reston, Virginia where she had responsibility for the Landsat, remote sensing, geography and civilian mapping programs of the agency. It was under her leadership that implementation of the Landsat data policy was reformed to release all data over the internet at no additional cost to the user -- an action that has resulted in the release of more than 12 million Landsat scenes to date. As the 2007 Chair of the international Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) she led the space-agency response to the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) satellite requirements for sustained measurement of the GCOS Essential Climate Variables (ECVs). She holds a Bachelor´s degree in Geology from the State University of New York at Cortland, a Master´s degree in Geography from the University of Denver, and a Master´s degree in Civil Engineering from Stanford University.

Teams of business, policy, engineering, and scientific leaders address high-priority issues and implement sticky solutions to create lasting value. Our focus is on the integration of energy-, water- and food-security with livable environments to support ‘Sustainable Cities’ and urban and rural forestry. Prior to leading his Company, Dr. Sahl was the Director of Environment & Resource Sustainability, and was responsible for the development, strategy, and implementation of Southern California Edison’s corporate responsibility and sustainability programs. He was also responsible for SCE’s Charitable Contributions in the area of ‘Environmental Giving’. Jack headed SCE’s Corporate Environment, Health & Safety department and was responsible for all aspects of worker safety and environmental policy and programs (17,000 SCE personnel, 50,000 Square mile integrated Generation, Transmission and Distribution system). Dr. Sahl develops and implements EH&S Management Systems based on ANZI Z10-2005/ISO Framework. He has served on the Boards of the Los Angeles Conservation Corp (Chair), the National Forest Foundation, Sequoia Riverlands Trust, the Technical Advisory Board for Lloyd's Registry, the Stakeholder Advisory Committee of the Western Governors Association Wildlife Council, the TWU Sector Council for the NIOSH National Occupational Research Agenda, Electric Power Research Institute’s Energy and Sustainability Council (Chair), and the Electric Power Research Institute’s Occupational Health and Safety Science Advisory Panel.

He is Editor of the Series of Book on Buildings, Energy and Solar Technologies published by Earthscan Science Publishers in London. Dr. Santamouris is Editor in Chief of the Journal of Building Environmental Research, Editor of the Energy and Buildings Journal, Associate Editor of the Solar Energy Journal and member of the Editorial Board of seven additional journals. He is editor and author of 12 international books on topics related to heat island, solar energy and energy conservation in buildings published by Earthscan and other international publishers. He has coordinated many international research programs and authored almost 210 scientific papers published in peer review international scientific journals. He teaches environmental economics and policy at the Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Development, Agricultural University of Athens. He is a Honorary Research Fellow at the Centre for Social and Economic Research on the Global Environment [CSERGE] and member of the Committee for the Study of Climate Change Impacts, Bank of Greece. He obtained his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Frankfurt and was Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs and Environmental Policy – Greek Ministry of External Affairs and National Representative at the JRC Governing Board. He has published extensively on the socio-economic aspects of environmental and resource use, water economics, ICZM and related issues.

Jan C. Semenza, Ph.D., MPH European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, Stockholm, Sweden Dr. Semenza is the Head of the Health Determinants Programme, at the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), a public health agency in Europe, where he directs the work on environmental and social determinants of infectious diseases. He was a faculty member at UC Berkeley, UC Irvine, Oregon Health and Science University, and at Portland State University where he taught in the Oregon Masters Program of Public Health. Dr. Semenza was an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) where he led the CDC response to the heat wave in Chicago in 1995. Currently he leads the climate change effort at ECDC in Stockholm. His research has been published in high-impact journals such as Cell, New England J of Medicine, Lancet ID, Science, Nature Climate Change and in several books.

Tritakis was research director in the Research Center for Astronomy and Applied Mathematics of the Academy of Athens and research collaborator in the same laboratory, at present. He is member of the administrative board of the Mariolopoulos - Kanaginis Foundation for the Environmental Sciences.
He was the national representative in the Scientific Committee of European Space Agency (ESA) and currently he is deputy Greek GEO Principal in the Group on Earth Observations. On account of his position to GEO Dr. Tritakis participates in the High Level Working Group of the European Union which specifies the European policy to GEO. He has published around one hundred and thirty papers, articles and reviews in scientific journals and conference proceedings.

Presently he is a member of the Steering Group of MedClivar and a member of the External Expert Commission of IMEDEA (Spain). He is currently participating in an EU funded project looking at the liability for carbon storage under the seabed and a scientific project examining marine extremes under climate changes scenarios funded by Lloyd's Register Trust Fund. Dr. Tsimplis has recently been appointed as Director of the Institute of Maritime Law, based in the Southampton Law School.

Stelios C. Zerefos, Ph.D. School of Applied Arts, Hellenic Open University, Greece Dr. Zerefos is an architect, associate professor at the School of Applied Arts of the Hellenic Open University. He has practiced architecture since 1999 after graduating from the University of Plymouth, UK and the University of California at Los Angeles, USA. In 2004 he published his Ph.D. thesis titled “Intelligent Limit: Criteria of the transformation of the building skin”. In the period 2003-2008 he has taught architectural design with digital means as a visiting lecturer at the National Technical University of Athens School of Architecture and lectured at the European Master’s Degree for Renewable Energy Sources in the University of Athens. Dr. Zerefos is the author of several academic and educational publications, as well as publications in scientific journals and international conference proceedings. He retains an architectural practice in Athens (www.zerefos-tessas.gr) focused on architectural and environmental design with more than 40 architectural design projects. His work has been published and acquired several awards in international architectural competitions. He is a member of the Technical Chamber of Greece, as well as international organizations and reviewer in international scientific journals focusing on buildings and energy efficiency.
